Richard Ogden - A champion of the PPC

It is with great sadness that we have to advise that Richard Ogden died in St Catherine’s Hospice, Preston , on the evening of 12 th March.

Dick - as he was known to most club members - was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour last autumn and even though he braved surgery and radio therapy, he unfortunately only had a brief period of respite around Christmas time.

Dick was Secretary of mono print circle C2 for many years and became our Competition Secretary in 1992, organising the Founders Cup and the Annual Print Competitions. His love was the art of monochrome photography; he was a superb darkroom worker and a staunch defender of film based “real” photography. Under his leadership and guidance, C2 has consistently been one of the top PPC circles and they have held high the flag of quality darkroom printing.

In some ways it is a surprise that someone who was such a strong supporter of film based monochrome photography should be the person that designed and managed our website. Its launch coincided with the club name change in 2000 and since then it has been updated every month; not to mention frequent improvements and additions. This is probably the most obvious example of Dick’s influence on the PPC and will remain his legacy.

Dick’s passion for photography and his exceptional work as a leading member of the club means that his passing will be a great loss, not only to the club generally, but to fellow members, indeed real friends, throughout the whole of the UK.

John Kay
General Secretary
